The Prism Coffee Table
A sleek and unique addition to interior lounge spaces or outdoor patio spaces.
Known for its durability and low shrinkage rate, Kiaat (Also known as African Teak) was the perfect choice for this semi-outdoor coffee table that a client ordered to furnish their patio.
Design wise, I tend to lean towards sharp geometric forms and proportions while still maintaining balance with elegance and sleekness. This piece is a prime example of that- as it mimics a fundamental geometric form, the prism, while still presenting as simple and classy.
With the base replicating the vertices and edges of a prism and the top replicating one its faces, it creates a sleek and hollow look to balance the harsh nature of strict geometric forms.
This coffee table leans toward the geometrically heavy side of my design tendencies and style, however, it does not lose its sense of sleek elegance thanks to the base design.
The inclusion of visible joinery such as half lap dovetails, through tenons as well as the visible dowel pins on the top adds a touch of fine detail to the build, balancing the geometric nature of the table once again.
